All modes give EXP. Story mode is kinda easier, since the enemies tend to be somewhat weaker than other modes. Most EXP is gained from Quick Battle, Maximum AI, when you have a 3x or more exp boost on the Chocobo Play Plans. Quick Battle also lets you fight against high lvl enemies, as long as you have a high-level character.
